Project Overview

The manufacturing industry faces a critical challenge in ensuring the quality and dimensional accuracy of additively manufactured parts, particularly as these technologies scale from prototyping to production. Our advanced robotic metrology system addresses this challenge by creating an automated measurement cell that combines a laser profiler mounted on a 6-DoF robotic arm with sophisticated path planning algorithms. The core innovation lies in the system’s ability to follow optimal scanning trajectories, capture partial surface profiles, and fuse these measurements into complete 3D point clouds and surface models. This technical approach enables automated computation of dimensional deviations and surface texture analysis, providing the critical feedback loop needed to optimize printing parameters and maintain process control in real-time manufacturing environments.

The system offers immediate applications in factory automation and quality control, providing sub-millimeter accuracy measurements that integrate seamlessly with existing production workflows. Industries benefit from reduced manual inspection time, lower quality control costs, and improved product consistency through automated defect detection and statistical process control. The research impact extends to establishing new industry standards for additive manufacturing metrology while enabling advanced manufacturing techniques that rely on precise dimensional control. Our team combines expertise in industrial robotics, computer vision, and point cloud processing, seeking partnerships with manufacturing companies interested in deploying next-generation quality control systems and research institutions working on advanced metrology and automation technologies.
